Addiction

Texting

CONFERENCE ROOM – A few managers and engineers were in the same meeting with me to discuss a recent problem with a customer, and I again observed the well-known addiction of the modern times.  Two people were on their laptops, and 3-5 people were either checking Emails on the phone or text-messaging during the meeting.  It’s not  like they were not responding or absent-minded in the meeting; in fact they were all providing suggestions and writing down action items at the same time! As I marveled the abilities of these people in the room with me, I unintentionally pulled out my iPhone and just stared at the screen for a few seconds… then I laughed…

I had no purpose in unlocking my phone, none at all! I am not sure if it’s seeing others do it or it’s also my habit, that I just had to unlock my phone every once in a while.  Even when I am at my cubicle, many times I just have to unlock and check my Facebook status, knowing that I just did that 5 minutes ago.  Outside of the office, I find myself doing the same thing – during traffic light waiting time, dinner time with fiancee, watching TV, etc.. I, or we, have become so distant from people and ourselves !!!

We’re talking to the people on the other side of the cell phone or laptop, while others are talking to us in the same meeting room; we’re checking Facebook updates when our other half or our friends are telling us some not-too-funny jokes; we’re reading a new Email while waiting for the light that we just don’t get a moment off to relax… These small moments on our smart phones or mobile devices have filled up the remaining empty slots in our lives!!

As pathetic as it is, I have decided to NOT touch my iPhone while eating, so I can at least try to come up with stuff to talk about to whoever I am eating with! I will not try to find an escape by “checking my mail” or doing some random things on the phone; I will reconnect with people, or just to relax with an Email-less state by myself! I can do it, I can do it, I can do it!!!

So when do I start? After checking my Email… j/k :P

I wonder how true this is: “Worldwide iPhone OS marketshare has increased from 33 to 40 percent in the last 6 months, with substantial share in all regions except for Asia and Africa.”

Ha! FB 3.0 is my favorite app @ work! My company blocked it so I have to use my phone. Proud of you for trying to spend quality time with the loved ones.
