2ND FLOOR COPY MACHINE – My coworker was faxing (yeah, that’s right) some PO’s to some vendors, and then all of a sudden the IT guy came over to replace the toner in a nearby copy machine. Feeling frustrated, my coworker then asked the IT guy on whether the IT department could implement eFax (or something similar) so that faxing can be done digitally, saving trees and precious time. Unfortunately, the IT guy looked at him and said: “This is my job security that I can fix fax machines and replace toners, are you expecting me to do the eFax thing so I can lose my job?”
I don’t know, this reminds me of, well, socialism (yeah…). If people do not have the motivation to make things better for the sake of merely keeping their jobs, then progress is impeded and you stay at where you are because that’s where you will be still. Americans have always embraced individualism, that you can be all that you can be as long as you try hard, explore, and take risks. This is how the Internet came to be, or iPhone, or maybe Mary Kay…., or these other visionaries thinking outside of the box to create things of the future~
You can now be replacing the toner as an “IT” guy, but sooner or later this could be “it” for you if eFax somehow, someday, catches up to you~~
