CUBICLE – My boss took a day off yesterday after working extremely hard for several weeks, and I really think he deserved the break. Well, after learning that the boss was taking a day off, I figured I should do the same thing while being physically present at work (whatever that means). Yet, the unexpected happened, again…
Normally you would think one would be less productive when there is no supervision, but then sometimes it happens in the opposite way. In fact, I worked VERY efficiently and was really productive in all my tasks and responses to others’ requests/demands. Why? Here are a few assumptions:
1. Relaxing Time: Usually when I have to slack off a bit or surf the Internet, I get nervous because I don’t know when the boss would be coming. The stress level while surfing the Internet (or chatting) keeps my shoulders tense, so even when I was supposedly “relaxing”, I wasn’t. When I really have to work, I feel like I just need to relax again, thinking the “relax time” earlier was just not enough. When the boss is not around, I relax when I feel like it, and I work when I feel like it; no need to pretend at all!
2. Time to Prove: when everyone knows that my boss is not around, it’s the best time to prove that I am a “hard-working” employee. If I slack off, I am just like everyone else; if I work harder, people see it and might have a better impression of my professionalism.
3. Catch-Up: Sometimes it’s better to do some follow-up activities or catch up on the things I should’ve worked on previously. So often do the bosses interrupt to ask us to do other “urgent” things, so this is also a good time to calm down and do some catch-up
So what’s the conclusion? I think having bosses around is necessary to keep us in check, but once a while a little time without the boss is a nice “vacation at work”~
