CUBICLE – I’ve been hearing people talk about LED TV lately, and have thought it was strange having LED in a display since my impression of LED is more like those little light bulb-like things on test circuit boards, or on computer main boards. Since my job is related to displays, I figured I should look into this and find out what exactly it is.
So the latest Samsung 6 and 7 series are the so-called LED TVs, and after some research on my best friend Google, I found out that these are actually still LCD TVs with a marketing name LED! On regular LCDs that you have on your computer, there’s this backlight on the back of the liquid crystals. Either the light passes through the crystals and display the desired colors, or the crystals block the light and make the screen black/dark. So on these LED TV’s, the liquid crystals are still being used, but the other difference is that the backlight in the back is LED. LED supposedly can be turned off unlike their cousin the regular fluorescent backlight, so this way the black/dark screen can be completely dark. Of course, there are other advantages, such as lower power consumption and much longer life span in the LED~ And if there are pros, there are cons, which include higher cost, immaturity of the technology in TVs (no partial turn-off on LED backlights yet), etc.
Other than the very boring technological summary above, I can’t help thinking about the marketing strategy (I am being nice for using this word) Samsung is trying to pull with the “LED TV’s” because they are just NOT LED TV but rather LCD TV still. Actually in the tech world, many times people re-define terms so that they can be the “first” to use that term, such as HD radio. HD was defined for video only in the beginning, but people started marketing it for radio as higher quality radio is being offered, and now HD radio is accepted as a proper term. Anyway, all these marketing schemes and whatnot confusing the heck out of me :P
So next time when people tell you how wonderful LED TV’s are, make sure you remind them it’s not yet true LED, just the backlight is LED ^_____^
