CUBICLE – When some coworkers come to my cubicle to talk about work, they bring rain to Southern California (or my face!)! They might or might not know that they spit more than others when they talk, but we know that’s the case… unfortunately.
Whatever the reason it is that the spit, and many times in our face or arms, here’s a few of my suggestions to combat these situations:
1. Joke: I sometimes crack jokes with certain people (who can take the jokes) and say something like: “Dude, what’s up with the spitting, haha, April shower or what?” If they’re close to you or they are those good joke-takers, then you’ll be OK.
2. Gentle Reminder: Or we can just gently tell the visitor that he/she spits: “Hey, XYZ, it seems like you’re spitting while you’re talking. I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s not very comfortable for me, etc., etc..” Depending on whether that person can take these kind words or even understand them, you can make your own decision.
3. Phone: we can also just say we’re busy, and will call them after the completion of the current task. When talking over the phone, we can avoid some nice spit shower :P
4. Cafeteria: another way is to invite this person to go chat at the cafeteria where there are tables, so the table can be the buffer between the two of you. Of course, the excuse can be ” oh, we might be a bit too loud for the cubicle neighbors, so let’s go to ….”
Anyway, let me think which one I want to use tomorrow…. or I’ll pick option 5 to wear a rain coat @_____@
