CAFETERIA – Today the news was saying that President Obama is in relative health, but one issue is his smoking habit. Supposedly he promised Michelle that he would quit when he was running for the presidency, but I guess he didn’t make that promise… Interestingly, today I was getting water in the cafeteria, a coworker went by and was on his way out for a smoke. Remembering the news about the president, I then said to him:
Me: “Hey Jim, you know what smoking does to you, right?”
Jim: “Yeah, I can’t quit anymore…”
Me: “Well, the president is trying, so maybe you should, too, haha”
Jim: “Haha, I’ll wait until he quits, but hey, you know smokers don’t get old?”
Me: “What? How can that be? What do you mean?”
Jim: “Because we die before we get old…”
Me: …..
That was the funniest and saddest thing I heard all day. I dont’ know President Obama, but I am sure he also knows that smoking is not good for him. So the dilemma is that these smokers know what’s going to happen to them, but they just can’t seem to give this habit up! They will probably continue this struggle and dilemma until the day when their bodies just can’t take it anymore, and they’ll think about what should’ve been done a long time ago.
I remember my grandpa told me that he used to smoke a lot before 30, but he quit right when he turned 30. He said an older friend asked him if he wanted to do great things, and he said “of course!” So the old friend told him, if you want to do great things, you need to first control yourself; when you have perfect control over yourself, then you can do things greater than yourself!” After hearing that, my grandpa decided to quit, and he hasn’t smoked since then…
My grandpa is no president, but he did achieve things that most people can never do in their life time! He made a great fortune being a successful businessman, and he held his integrity in all he does until now. At the age of 90, he’s still doing things much greater than himself, and that’s simply amazing~ So yeah, grandpa’s not a smoker for the last 60 years because he chose to be different, and now he is old but still very strong~!
